"Bernhardt,
Pahl, and Kennerly at P.A.St.A. Gallery in January" Publication: St. Johns County Chronicle Article Date: January 2003 The featured artist at P.A.St.A. Fine Art Gallery rates among the most unusual of sculptors. Dennis Bernhardt is a blacksmith! New to the world of fine arts, he is presenting 16 sculptures all produced with the past year. Sweat and muscle, driven by a strong desire to express his ideas and emotions, has helped Bernhardt produce extraordinary works on his self-made forge. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he spent 15 years as a welder and pipe fitter and later enrolled in a few summer courses at Peter's Valley Art Center in New Jersey where he learned the basics of blacksmithing and was encouraged to develop his own ideas. In 1998 he moved to St. Augustine and built his own forge working with low carbon steel, brass, and bronze to produce giant shells, plant forms, and even a six foot mermaid. Bernhardt is a member of the ABANA, Artist Blacksmiths of North Carolina, is an award-winning member of the St. Augustine Art Center, and exhibits regularly at P.A.St.A. Gallery. In the spring he will demonstrate his skills in the garden of the St. Augustine Historical Society on his forge. Bernhardt will be present at the First Friday Art Walk, Jan. 3, to explain his work. ...Back to Publicity/Awards |
